Accurate Happened 31 January 2021.
US COVID-19 deaths set a monthly record in December 2020 (over 77,000), and January 2021 broke that record again, making it the deadliest month of the pandemic to that point. "Dark winter" is imprecise, but a severe winter surge clearly occurred.
